Many times we get asked if we can make a memorial quilt for someone who has died. Often, these shirts are not necessarily t-shirts with nice graphics, but are usually dress shirts, polo shirts, boxing shorts (yes, this is true) or other items that are meaningful. Our answer, is usually yes….. we have no problems incorporating many items into these quilts.
Here are some items that usually can be used in a quilt that maybe you never thought of:
- Jackets
- boxer shorts
- ties (while we don’t do specific “tie” quilts we will incorporate 1 or 2 ties in these quilts).
- nightgowns
- pajamas
- blankets
As you can see there are quite a few items that are fine to include in your quilt but keep in mind, there are still a few items that will not work.
When we incorporate some of these odd items, the quilt does take on a different appearance than a standard “t-shirt quilt.” Since many times there are not any graphics on these shirts, they can look someone plain. Most of the time, the loved ones that are having these quilts made are not concerned about the appearance of their quilt, but are more interested in the memory of the one who wore the shirts.
So if you have a loved one that has passed away, please keep in mind that there are options for us using their clothes to make you a memorable quilt that will last for years.
This quilt was made out of fine knit sweaters. Gloria absolutely loves her quilt. No one can bring her husband back, but she treasures this quilt with his sweaters.
