Creating More Blocks
Not enough shirts!
So you want to have a quilt made, but you just don’t think you have enough shirts to make one. Our minimum quilt requires 12 blocks and you only have 10 shirts. Did you know that we can print images and artwork on fabric to create blocks? The quilt on the right shows what children’s artwork can look like on a quilt.
We use a company out of Durham, NC called Spoonflower. They have the ability to print images on a huge selection of different fabrics. We usually have them print images on their organic cotton knit. This is not like a transfer which can end up stiff and yellow looking. These blocks almost look like a t-shirt themselves when they are done. The quilt to the right was done for a customer that frequently sends us her grandchildren’s artwork. We’ve done a few different quilts for this customer and they always come out great. All of these blocks come to us as paper copies of the originals.
The quilt pictured is using 100% children’s artwork, but there are many other items that can be printed on fabric to create blocks as you can see by these suggestions:
- Report cards
- Funeral cards
- Handwritten letters
- Concert tickets
- Bible verses
- Quotes or sayings
- Recipes
- Anything that can be scanned
So if you think you don’t have enough shirts, think outside the box to create a blocks using unusual items to put the personal touch to your quilt.
